Leah Hewson Kin Connection, 2022
Presented by Stoney Road Press, Booth D07
Location: Art on Paper Main Floor
Kin Connection is an installation created by Leah Hewson that highlights the significance of connection and support. Where one entity cannot stand alone, multiple entities together manifest greater potential and outcome. Singular flat plain components interlock together to create abstract structures that intersect active space. From the outside, the arbitrary formation looks in disorder, however on closer inspection the configuration creates suggested pathways to explore.
The basis for these elements is inspired by the construction toy ‘Octons’ which was first seen in 1973. The construction of Kin Connection, however, lays out variable large scale modular forms made of thick honeycomb cardboard that echo something like DNA. Abstract aesthetics synonymous with Hewson’s print and painting practice invite the curious visitor to escape and explore in a playful manner while observing the network of shapes that bolster and engage with each other.
Hewson has a First-Class BA(Hons) degree in Fine Art from IADT, Dublin Ireland. Solo exhibitions include Blowout, Stoney Road Press (2022), Ammo Veil at The Hillsboro Fine Art gallery (2018) and Scintilla at The Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin (2017) which was the culmination of work produced during a six-month residency at The Royal Hibernian Academy School. Other residencies include a six-month residency at the NARS Foundation in Brooklyn New York in 2018, SIM Residency in Berlin in 2019 and Wilton Park Studios Residency, Dublin in 2019/2020, Facebook AIR program (2020)where she created two wall murals in the European Headquarters, and currently in residence at The Dean Arts Studio, Dublin.
