Observer correspondent Alanna Martinez once described this September art fair as having a healthy range of price points and offering a genuinely pleasant viewing experience for art, calling it her “Armory Week sanctuary” and as close to a perfect art fair as you can get.

The fair stands out on the Armory Week circuit both for its medium-centric approach and for the intimate viewer experience it cultivates.

This year the spotlight is on artist-made books, a first for one of New York’s mainstream art fairs. The inaugural book fair, called “BOOKSMART” and nestled within the main floor of Pier 36, is led by the Center for Book Arts, the oldest non-profit dedicated to supporting the craft.

Among the standout presentations at the fair are Marlborough Graphics exhibition of prints by fifteen artists, including Francis Bacon and Louise Bourgeois, who emphasize the use of geometric shapes and organic forms in their works; Accola Griefen’s display of works by significant American women artists, including mixed-media drawings and prints by Judy Pfaff; ELEGAL’s solo show of figure studies by George Petrides, who currently has sculptural works at the Peter Marino-redesigned Tiffany flagship store in New York and the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago; and ADLAR Studio’s mix of prints by Kenny Scharf, the Haas Brothers and others.

Art on Paper is dedicated to pushing the envelope on one of art’s oldest mediums.

One hundred galleries come together to celebrate the humble but versatile medium in the ninth edition of this fair that also includes performance-based works showcasing the many creative possibilities of paper.

For its ninth edition, Art on Paper will continue to push dimensional boundaries, this time also through workshops, paper-derived 3D works, and the inclusion of a mini art book fair curated by the Center for Book Arts. That’s in addition to the revival of the curated international Flat Files section.

Heller Gallery announced its debut participation at Art on Paper, where it will be presenting a curated selection of works by Kerry Miller, Mel Douglas & Sibylle Peretti.

This year, Art on Paper is launching an Artist Book Fair organized by the Center for Book Arts to feature 8-10 institutions showcasing books that push the bounds of ideas, material, and form. Additionally, artists such as Tariqa Waters, named one of Seattle’s top 25 most influential artists, and Danish artist Rose Eken with Alchemy Gallery will be featured. Art and Paper will also provide attendees with several interactive experiences such as a live printmaking workshop by Shoestring Press.

From September 8 to 11, the fair will showcase top modern and contemporary paper-based art from 95 galleries, including works from Bang Geul Han, Yuko Nishikawa, and more.

Focusing on modern and contemporary paper-based art, the fair’s seventh edition showcased the diversity and resilience of the paper world following the pandemic hiatus.

This charming fair bills itself as a show of “paper-based art,” but as in past editions, much more than just prints and drawings will be on display.

The beloved Art on Paper fair is returning to Pier 36 with 67 exhibiting galleries from South Korea to Colombia, New York, and New Mexico.

“Every gallery has artists who work exclusively on paper, but they also have artists who maybe [use paper as] a certain part of their oeuvre that they don’t often get to show,” Freeman says. “It creates these very unique little moments booth to booth. They feel more like exhibitions than art fair booths.”

Art on Paper’s medium-driven focus lends itself to significant projects and unique moments that set the fair apart and established an important destination for the arts in New York City.

One of the strengths of Art on Paper is how artists and galleries showcase the diversity of the paper medium, with signifiant projects exploring, expanding, and re-imaging what a work on paper can be.

“I like Art On Paper because it’s a format that can bring in lots of types of work,” said James. “It’s not just bluechip, and it’s not just experimental. It’s approachable, so it has a collector base that seeks it out.”

Five years old, it is devoted to all things paper: from dealers in drawings, prints and occasionally photographs to large paper-based installations. These, and the orderly booths and carpeted aisles, suggest a mini Armory Show.

Additionally, the Art on Paper fair, which will run from March 7 to 10 on Pier 36 along the Hudson River, is taking in nine galleries that were slated to participate in Volta.

“We thoughtfully reengineered what we were doing with the space in order to accommodate as many of our friends as we could,” Max Fishko, a managing partner at Art on Paper organizer Art Market Productions.

With 85 galleries this year, the New York art fair devoted to works on paper explores the large and small, the personal and political.

Whether one collecting specialism could sustain an Armory Week event was once a valid question. But Art on Paper’s stable growth, and its 25,000 visitors last year, are increasingly proposing an answer. “People seem very comfortable with the idea of a fair based on paper at this point,” says Kelly Freeman, the fair’s director, of its broadly envisioned purview, which includes paper-based sculpture, installations, photography, drawings and multiples.

This week, photographs from The Power of Pink will go on display in a special exhibition at Art on Paper, a medium-driven art fair that takes place in downtown Manhattan at Pier 36. This year marks the fair’s fourth anniversary and its fourth year of partnership with the Lower Eastside Girls Club.
