Ching Ke Lin Firework, 2020
Bamboo
11.5 x 14.70 x 9.65 Feet
Presented by Fremin Gallery
The sound of firecrackers and the sight of fireworks are integral to Taiwanese folk culture, featuring prominently in festivals, ceremonies, weddings, and funerals. These elements are believed to bring good fortune, avoid disaster, honor the gods, and bestow luck.
Ching Ke Lin weaves bamboo strips into umbrella-shaped structures in both 2D and 3D, mimicking fireworks. Although the x, y, and z axes of the artwork seem independent, the bamboo strips are closely woven together. Changes in weather cause the bamboo to expand and shrink, producing a cracking sound.
The bloom of the bamboo strips forms a round shape, while the overall structure is a cube, symbolizing the connections between humans and nature. The shape and sound of the artwork evoke the familiar festival scenes, drawing us back to those cherished moments.
Artist Bio
Ching Ke Lin is a bamboo artist, who keeps delving into the land, exploring the common ground between humans and bamboo, and refining his creative vocabulary in the law of nature. Realizing that bamboo is tough yet flexible, carrying the philosophy of life, creative potential, and technical culture of humankind beyond time and space, Lin has embraced his devotion to the spirit of all things, traveling into nature and exploring the bamboo world with his playful heart.
His installations and landscape works have subverted the public’s conventional image of bamboo craftsmanship and have always conveyed a childlike and humorous insight into ordinary life, evoking people’s affection for the land and environment. Furthermore, Lin has been commissioned by Uniqlo, Mercedes-Benz, Nousaku, KITOKITO TOYAMA, 7-Eleven, and PX Mart.
In his unbounded thinking in design, experimentation, ideas and practices, Ching Ke Lin expects to continue to look at the present and past of the industry from a wider perspective to dissolve the barriers between people, bamboo, time and space, breaking the traditional image of bamboo, and creating a contemporary look of the material.
